What is it about?
This paper examines various proposals put forward in Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch language materials of the late 16th and early 17th centuries to strengthen security in the Singapore Straits region by constructing fortifications. Specific proposals included structures on Singapore, Sentosa, Bintan and Karimun.

The article makes a case that Singapore was known in the early modern period and that its strategic location was appreciated by the early European colonial as well as the Malay powers.
Perspectives
This marked a first step in my rewriting of the early modern history of Singapore almost two decades ago.
