Why is it important?

University students need confidence in digital ways of working relevant to their discipline, yet often lecturers lack confidence in these new digital ways of practicing their subject. As universities try to promote uptake of digital practices to academic staff they frequently focus on how to use particular tools. This paper illustrates how the value to support students' learning is the critical thing that motivates lecturers to learn new tools.

Perspectives

I have seen how universities try to encourage use of digital tools by laying on staff development courses. However these courses seem to have limited impact on lecturers' practices. Instead this paper argues that focusing on the value to students' learning is the key to encouraging take up of digital tools.
