What is it about?
The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between heavy metal concentrations in drinking water and the incidence of type 1 diabetes (T1DM) among children in the Pomeranian and Lublin provinces of Poland during the years 2015–2016. The results indicate that environmental exposure to certain heavy metals may contribute to an increased risk of developing type 1 diabetes.

Why is it important?
Our research findings indicate that environmental exposure to certain heavy metals may contribute to an increased risk of developing type 1 diabetes.
Perspectives
Together with my co-authors, we believe that the results obtained should serve as a basis for further efforts regarding environmental protection and public education—particularly for pregnant women and young children—and, consequently, for the prevention of type 1 diabetes.
