What is it about?

We assessed the ecological health of mountain rivers in southern Ecuador by classifying rivers into types based on their physical, chemical, and biological characteristics. By sampling water quality, habitats, and macroinvertebrate communities at 90 sites, we showed how different river types respond to pollution, habitat changes, and vegetation loss. Our findings highlight key environmental factors that influence river life and offer a practical framework for river monitoring in tropical Andean regions.

Why is it important?

High Andean rivers supply drinking water to millions, but face increasing threats from agriculture, urbanisation, and habitat loss. Our approach helps water managers and scientists better target monitoring and conservation efforts, ensuring ecosystem health and safe water supplies for the future.

Perspectives

It was rewarding to combine fieldwork and data analysis to reveal the diversity and vulnerability of Andean rivers. I hope this research supports improved biomonitoring and inspires greater protection of these vital freshwater ecosystems.
