What is it about?

This is a review article on phocine distemper virus (PDV) and cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV), which cause devastating diseases in marine animals.

Why is it important?

Epidemiological reports of PDV and CeMV have accumulated since their discovery nearly 30 years ago. A similar virus (measles virus [MV] ) cause a severe disease in humans. The host range determinants of these viruses remain unknown.

Perspectives

The integration of epidemiological, virological, structural, and computational studies of viruses and their host receptors should provide deeper insight into host specificity and switching of these viruses.
