What is it about?

The manuscript deals with common genetic systems influencing how the bacteria cope with environmental stresses.

Why is it important?

Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus) is the causal agent of deathly infections in humans, taking the highest toll in infants below 5 years, elder population and immunocompromised patients (like after cancer therapy). Thus, knowing the features of the genetic content of these bacteria will allow us to tackle the infections caused by them.

Perspectives

Knowing how to deal with pneumococcal infections is an essential step towards understanding how to fight their infections
