What is it about?

In this article, we share the experience of a public school in Colombia that has a special focus on renewable energy. What we did was observe how students learn and how teachers teach, to understand whether these styles are aligned and how they can improve education on sustainability issues. We discovered that both students and teachers prefer a reflective style, meaning they like to think before acting, analyse calmly, and understand topics thoroughly. This information is key to designing better educational strategies that connect with the actual ways people learn, especially when it comes to teaching something as important as clean energy from an early age.

Why is it important?

This research is important because it provides a concrete and necessary perspective on how to develop critical awareness of climate change and renewable energy in schools. What makes it unique is that it does not stop at content, but analyses how students actually learn and how teachers teach in a real context, in a public school in a remote region of Colombia. Its approach connects education with the Sustainable Development Goals, promoting teaching that is more relevant, reflective and adapted to the needs of the environment. Instead of applying general models, this research starts from the local reality to propose concrete improvements in how sustainability is taught from an early age, something that is key to building a more conscious and committed citizenry for the future of the planet.

Perspectives

This article gave us the opportunity to listen closely to both teachers and students at a public school that is doing something extraordinary: introducing renewable energy concepts at an early age. Often, educational research remains theoretical, but here we were able to work directly with a community and understand how teaching and learning really happen in classrooms. I hope this article encourages more educators and policymakers to value local contexts and student-centred approaches when teaching sustainability. For me, seeing how reflective learning can empower young people to think critically about their role in the future of the planet was one of the most inspiring parts of this work.
