What is it about?
In this paper, we present an analysis of more than a decade of data on the presence of bacteria, such as total coliforms and Escherichia coli, in the middle basin of the Bogotá River. We review how their levels have changed between 2007 and 2019, identifying trends, pollution peaks, and possible causes related to human activities. Our objective was to better understand the state of water quality over time and provide information that can be used to make decisions and implement measures to help restore this important river.

Why is it important?
This research is important because it offers a clear and documented view of how bacterial contamination has evolved in one of Colombia's most important and most affected rivers. What makes it unique is the analysis of more than a decade of continuous data, something uncommon in water quality studies in the country, which allows for the identification of patterns and changes that would not be seen in isolated assessments. Its approach combines the environmental perspective with the need for public management, providing solid and easy to interpret information to guide policies, prioritise sanitation actions and evaluate whether the measures implemented have been effective. In this way, it becomes a valuable tool for advancing towards the real recovery of the Bogotá River and the protection of the health of the communities that depend on it.
Perspectives
Writing this article was especially meaningful because it allowed us to bring together years of scattered monitoring data into a single, coherent story about the health of the Bogotá River. Working with a team committed to both science and environmental recovery made the process deeply rewarding. For me, the most fulfilling part was seeing how a careful analysis of long-term trends can reveal not only the scale of the problem, but also where progress is being made. I hope this work inspires decision-makers and citizens alike to see that with consistent monitoring, transparency, and action, it is possible to turn data into real environmental change.
