What is it about?
To highlight how cultural heritage sites could be integrated into natural ones within a process of global coastal area management, three case studies have been discussed. In fact, a new kind of approach to coastal regions through an Integrated Coastal Zone Management is necessary in order to valorize the natural and cultural heritage of coastal regions for the social and economic growth of local people.

Why is it important?
It is important to integrate cultural heritage sites and Natura 2000 sites for the purpose of a holistic approach to the management of the coastal areas.
Perspectives
The adoption of ICZM policies could contribute to mitigating both natural and anthropogenic hazards to raising greater awareness of local populations, and to promoting more sustainable forms of coastal tourism. As a result, Calabria could serve as an innovative landscape model for the active incorporation of natural and cultural issues into the ICZM process.
