What is it about?

Urban sprawl generates versatile conflicts between nature and society and threatening the sustainability of urban agglomerations. Land cover changes in suburban locations are often result in environmental damages, landscape degradation, land fragmentation, shrinkage of wildlife habitat and undermine the peri-urban agricultural capacity and ecological balance.

Why is it important?

The problem of urban sprawl should be an essential issue in the upcoming EU CAP reforms because agricultural subsidies and efforts to develop short food chains can play an important role in consolidating or reversing the negative impacts of sprawl not just in Hungary, but also in Europe. According to our land use change model, until 2040 the expansion of artificial surfaces in the metropolitan region of Budapest will strongly influence the sustainability of the FUA and the resilience of its settlements.

Perspectives

We intend to focus on related topics that can provide additional support for urban planning and agricultural policy regarding the long-term effects of urban sprawl.
