What is it about?

The article is about the political processes around the changes that occurred in a small town in Iceland when people tried to make things more sustainable: changing the waste treatment system, making the transport system more sustainable and planting trees. We analyse how all these practices are connected to each other and which role local transition champions played.

Why is it important?

The transition in Akureyri can serve as a good example for other places. It highlights where potential for sustainability lies and it shows how important local transition champions are. We show how these champions can set up institutions that can help in initiating and managing an urban sustainability transition.

Perspectives

This article is based on the excellent master thesis of my friend and former student Rakel. I am particularly happy that we managed to turn this into an article because the story of Akureyri's transition is both interesting and uplifting.
