What is it about?
Consumer wearables can measure resting heart rate variability (HRV), but its usefulness has been uncertain. This study found that resting HRV measured during sleep or after waking was linked with long-term health indicators including average blood glucose, depressive symptoms, and sleep difficulty.

Why is it important?
Consumer wearables collect heart rate variability every day, but researchers have questioned how well these measurements reflect health. This study suggests that resting HRV measured during sleep or immediately after waking may provide a meaningful wearable-based indicator of general health, but further research is needed.
Perspectives
I measured my own resting HRV daily, as I thought it could potentially be a measure of strain. Results here seemed to suggest it captured general health. Perhaps it could be both in that high strain from work or other demands can become a health issue. We will investigate this possibility in future work.
