What is it about?

Studies by scholars of the history of Chinese religions and politics, and original sources on "Teachings" and "Rites" representing religions in traditional China, are used to show the differences between Chinese religions and monotheism. The Book of Rites and Xunzi are then used to suggest the reason for the differences and the need for a broadening of the sociological theories of religion.

Why is it important?

A knowledge of the history and the reasons for basic differences in how various religious traditions developed, and how religion is now understood in the West and East Asia could gainfully help to lessen tensions generated by cultural misunderstandings.
