What is it about?

Human milk is not just a nutrition substance. It is full of immunological molecules which are beneficial for the baby and helps infant gut immunity maturation. We have shown that human milk immunological composition differs between the countries.

Why is it important?

Human milk is the main source of nutrition during a critical period of the first months of life. It is a time when metabolic and immune programming happens, driven largely by effect on intestinal function. By understanding BM composition and its determinants, we can develop new tools to influence metabolic and immune programming in early life in order to improve short and long term health.

Perspectives

The long term social benefit of this work is to move the field of Human Milk analysis forward, and understand the role of Human Milk-mediated infant programming for the early life promotion of long term health.
