What is it about?
This study investigates how artificial intelligence can automatically identify and classify different types of railway track defects from images. Several deep learning models, including MobileNetV2, DenseNet121, VGG16, ResNet50, and EfficientNetB0, were compared with a hybrid CNN–Random Forest approach using real-world railway images covering six common defect types. The study examines their performance and suitability for automated railway inspection and maintenance.

Why is it important?
Railway track defects can affect infrastructure reliability and operational safety, making timely and consistent inspection essential. This research is important because it evaluates multiple artificial intelligence models on real-world railway images and identifies their strengths in terms of classification performance and computational efficiency. The findings can support the development of automated inspection systems and more efficient condition-based railway maintenance.
Perspectives
From my perspective, this research demonstrates the practical potential of artificial intelligence for improving railway inspection. The comparative evaluation provides useful insights into how different deep learning architectures perform on real-world railway defect images. I believe that integrating efficient AI models with railway monitoring systems can support faster defect identification, timely maintenance decisions, and safer and more reliable railway operations.
