What is it about?

The control of Fusarium fungus infections on crops has largely accomplished through the use of fungicides, which, however, can have damaging effects on both humans and the environment. We describe the use of members of the genus Bacillus to control Fusarium in a safe and sustainable way.

Why is it important?

Fusarium head blight and wilt diseases result in severe crop losses in many nations, and so far the only way to control through is through the use of toxic fungicides. Towards developing sustainable strategies for fungal control, we describe what was been done so far to define useful strategies for exploiting this group of beneficial bacteria to use as inoculants by themselves or in combination with other microbes for enhanced crop protection

Perspectives

California is undergoing new fungal infections resulting in Fusarium dieback disease of avocados, which are important to the economy of my state.
