What is it about?
The aim of our study was to assess the environmental impact of untreated sewage. Water samples were collected from the Vistula River mouth and four locations in the Gulf of Gdańsk. The study revealed a deterioration in water quality at the Vistula mouth and in Baltic coastal waters upon the arrival of the sewage plume.

Why is it important?
In the event of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) failure, significant impacts are observed not only in the ecosystem in the immediate vicinity but also in the final receiving water body located approximately 423.5 km from the site of the incident.
Perspectives
The authors of the publication point out that the wider extent of the pollution's impact could have resulted from the mixing of water masses and increased wind action determining the pattern of surface currents.
