What is it about?
The main aim of the present research work is to outline some of the heat transfer performance aspects of tubular heat exchangers in the back-pass channel of a fluidized bed reactor, which is of interest to power plant designers from a design point of view, the scale-up of heat transfer surface, and also engineers due to the need to improve operation in industrial facilities. This research paper discusses the performance of tubular heat exchangers in the back-pass channel of a fluidized bed reactor under different operational conditions and varying reactor loads. The obtained heat transfer data may be used during the commissioning and operation of industrial fluidized bed reactors to ensure optimal operational conditions.

Why is it important?
The present work not only fills a gap in the research field but also provides valuable, practical, and useful information for validating calculation procedures utilized for the proper design of tube heat exchangers. Importantly, this authors’ achievement is not limited to steam superheaters or steam reheaters but can also be applied to other low-temperature tubular heat exchangers.
Perspectives
Based on the obtained findings, the following next steps in future research studies are identified: a) extend the applicability of the empirical heat transfer model to a wide operating conditions in fluidized bed reactors. The authors are going to conduct industrial-scale research in higher air staging ratios and across a wider range of fly ash particle diameters during industrial reactor operation. b) to consider the sensitivity analysis of tube bundle geometry on the performance of tubular heat exchangers.
