What is it about?
This study explores a new way of recovering useful energy from low-grade heat, such as industrial waste heat and natural temperature changes. The concept uses the normal expansion and contraction of solid materials as they heat up and cool down. We develop a physics-based model to determine how much mechanical and electrical energy could be recovered, what structural limits must be considered, and how the system could be scaled using modular steel elements. The study also evaluates the thermodynamic limits and economic potential of this approach.

Why is it important?
Large amounts of low-grade heat are available in industry and the environment, but much of this energy remains difficult to use effectively. Our study examines whether the ordinary thermal expansion and contraction of structural materials can provide an alternative route for recovering part of this energy. Importantly, we identify the physical and structural limits of this approach rather than assuming ideal performance. The results show how material properties, temperature variation, structural stability, cycle frequency, and system size determine the achievable energy output. This provides a quantitative basis for assessing when modular thermoelastic energy harvesting may be technically meaningful and where its fundamental limitations lie.
Perspectives
I have been interested for many years in the possibility of using the natural thermal expansion and contraction of solid materials as a source of useful mechanical energy. This study represents a further step toward understanding not only the potential of this concept, but also its physical and engineering limitations. I believe that identifying these limits is essential before moving from theoretical models toward practical prototypes. I hope this work encourages further analytical, numerical, and experimental research into simple and scalable methods for recovering useful energy from low-grade heat.
