The research, conducted by a team from Clemson University, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and other institutions, offers a detailed analysis of how solar energy could address the city's ongoing challenges with unstable electricity supply. The study, titled "Techno-Economic Assessment of the Viability of Commercial Solar PV System in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria," focuses on Market Square, a prominent supermarket in the city, and presents a comprehensive plan for implementing a solar PV system that could drastically reduce electricity costs and carbon emissions.

Port Harcourt's supermarkets currently rely heavily on diesel generators due to frequent grid power outages, leading to high operational costs and significant environmental impacts. The researchers used advanced software to design a solar PV system tailored to the specific energy needs of Market Square. The proposed system includes solar panels, battery storage, and the necessary control equipment, with an estimated upfront cost of $152,864. Key findings from the study include: The proposed solar PV system could generate enough electricity to meet 99% of the supermarket's daily energy needs. The system would reduce carbon emissions by approximately 582 tons per year, contributing significantly to environmental sustainability. The investment in solar energy would pay for itself within four years, thanks to savings on diesel costs and grid electricity. The levelized cost of electricity from the solar system is $0.14 per kWh, significantly lower than the $0.36 per kWh cost associated with diesel generators. "This study provides a clear roadmap for supermarkets in Port Harcourt to transition to a more sustainable and cost-effective energy source," said Dr. Michael Carbajales-Dale, a co-author of the study. "By adopting solar energy, these businesses can not only reduce their operational costs but also play a crucial role in mitigating climate change."
