What is it about?
We compared HIF-1α protein staining in 54 oral squamous cell carcinomas and 14 normal oral tissue samples from Pakistani patients. Tumours showed significantly more HIF-1α, and overexpression was associated with larger tumour size but not histological grade or TNM stage. One staining threshold distinguished tumour from normal tissue with 70% sensitivity and 100% specificity.

Why is it important?
Oral cancer needs better biomarkers for diagnosis and risk assessment. HIF-1α reflects how tumours adapt to low oxygen and may provide diagnostic information, but the findings require validation in larger cohorts and with standardised staining and scoring methods.
Perspectives
From my perspective, this work matters because Oral cancer needs better biomarkers for diagnosis and risk assessment. I hope the findings support further research and informed, evidence-based decisions.
