This paper explains how virtual reality and digital twins can recreate real commemorative events online. By building a virtual copy of a university campus, people from anywhere can meet, interact, and celebrate together in an immersive and accessible digital space.

Why is it important?
What makes this work unique and timely is its focus on a real, evaluated commemorative event, rather than a purely conceptual or experimental metaverse scenario. At a moment when institutions are actively seeking meaningful, post-pandemic digital engagement strategies, this study demonstrates how digital twins can be applied beyond industrial or technical domains to cultural, social, and academic contexts. The combination of immersive virtual reality, a faithful architectural digital twin, and formal usability assessment provides practical evidence of feasibility and user acceptance. This approach can inspire universities, cultural institutions, and event organizers to adopt scalable, inclusive virtual environments, thereby broadening participation, preserving heritage, and redefining how collective experiences are shared in the digital era.
Perspectives
This article stands out for moving beyond theoretical discussions of the metaverse and presenting a grounded, real-world application with measurable outcomes. I find particularly compelling the use of a commemorative academic event as the case study, as it highlights an underexplored yet highly relevant domain where digital twins can add social and cultural value, not only technical efficiency. The inclusion of a formal usability evaluation strengthens the work’s credibility and demonstrates user readiness for such environments. Overall, the study convincingly positions digital twins as enablers of meaningful social interaction and institutional memory, reinforcing their strategic relevance in the ongoing digital transformation of education and society.
