What is it about?
Implantable medical devices need reliable wireless links, but antennas compete for space and suffer interference inside the body. We developed an ultra-miniaturized dual-band MIMO antenna for biomedical implants. Using multiple antenna elements that operate simultaneously at two frequency bands, the design doubles the data reliability and link stability within a footprint small enough for real implants. Simulations and measurements confirm strong isolation between elements and safe performance in tissue-like environments.

Why is it important?
MIMO is standard in phones but rare in implants, where every cubic millimeter counts. Demonstrating dual-band, well-isolated MIMO at implantable scale means future pacemakers, neuromodulators, and biosensors can stream more data more reliably — enabling continuous, high-fidelity wireless health monitoring.
Perspectives
Antenna design inside the body is chess in a shoebox. This paper is our favorite checkmate so far.
