What is it about?

Whether we’ll be likely to develop a mental disorder in the autism spectrum (autism, Asperger syndrome, ADHD) or the psychosis one (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression) is determined by a genetic conflict between our parents’ selfish interests. Yet it's mitochondria that enable this battle, and unhealthy ones can tip the scales.

Perspectives

To best understand a disease, one can zoom in on its details but also zoom out to see how it relates to other ones. The latter is what we have done here, presenting a broad perspective on how mental disorders are tied to the evolutionary strategies of the two sexes and to growth, metabolism, and mitochondria.
