What is it about?
We studied how different ways of measuring aquatic insect community diversity—by species identities and by ecological roles—align in rivers of the tropical Andes. Using data from Ecuador, we found that some mathematical metrics give similar insights about river health, while others capture different aspects. Our work suggests that combining both types of metrics can give a clearer picture for monitoring stream ecosystems.

Why is it important?
Choosing the right diversity measures is crucial for reliable river monitoring, especially in biodiverse and threatened habitats. Our study shows that blending taxonomic and functional perspectives makes ecological assessments more robust, helping scientists and managers better track environmental changes and protect freshwater systems.
Perspectives
This research was an opportunity to bridge ecological theory and practical biomonitoring in a unique Andean setting. I hope these findings encourage others to use multiple diversity metrics together and contribute to more reliable conservation strategies for tropical rivers.
