What is it about?
Canine pyoderma is a common and often recurring skin infection in dogs. Because the bacteria causing it are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics, new treatment options are needed. In laboratory tests, selected antimicrobial peptides were effective against both antibiotic-sensitive and resistant staphylococci, suggesting that they could become promising ingredients in future topical treatments for infected skin.

Why is it important?
Antibiotic resistance makes recurrent canine skin infections increasingly difficult to treat. This study identifies antimicrobial peptides as promising candidates that may remain effective against multidrug- and methicillin-resistant bacteria. If confirmed in animal studies, they could support topical treatments and reduce reliance on systemic antibiotics.
Perspectives
I believe this study provides a valuable starting point for developing new treatments for recurrent canine pyoderma. Its strength lies in showing that resistance to conventional antibiotics did not reduce susceptibility to the tested peptides. I hope these findings encourage further studies of their safety and effectiveness as topical therapies.
