What is it about?

We report on interviews with intelligence operators to better understand this often obscure community. We begin by conducting a broad literature review to identify what past work has occurred and design better interview questions. We then interviewed a handful of experts who worked in the intelligence domain.

Why is it important?

From speaking to experts, we learned the following: 1.) Analysts rely on both formal and informal sources to do their work. 2.) The intelligence community is tight-knit, and often informal phone calls help analysts keep up-to-date on their work. 3.) Some outputs, often in the form of reports, are left unseen by the people who would benefit from them because there is often too much information to look at and limited notification technologies. The key takeaway we uncover is: Although an analyst's process may be highly personalized, some patterns in how work begins and ends could be generalized and supported by future assistive tools.

Perspectives

This work was conducted during the Summer Conference on Applied Data Science at the Laboratory for Analytic Sciences during the summer of 2022. The short 8-week conference involved Academic, Private, and Government members. At the time of writing, the data collected has not benefited from future qualitative coding.
