Smart buildings may be powered by advanced technology, but their success still depends heavily on human expertise. Project managers need a mix of technical knowledge, leadership, communication, budgeting, and risk-management skills to successfully deliver increasingly complex smart building projects.

Why is it important?

As buildings become more intelligent, managing their construction becomes more demanding. This study matters because it identifies the combination of technical knowledge, leadership, communication, budgeting and risk-management skills needed to ensure that smart-building technologies work together, remain within budget and genuinely improve the lives of building users.

Perspectives

More importantly, even buildings designed and constructed conventionally today should be managed with tomorrow’s intelligence in mind. Every new building should be planned as a potential smart building capable of accommodating future sensors, automation, digital controls, energy-management systems and emerging technologies. The buildings we construct today will shape how people live and work for decades; therefore, their management must anticipate a future in which smart technology is not an optional addition but a fundamental feature of a responsive, sustainable and human-centred built environment.
