What is it about?
Two-component FAD-dependent monooxygenases create valuable compounds that are of high interest for the chemical, pharmaceutical, and agrochemical industries. In this review we describe the mode of action of these enzymes and their biotechnological relevance.

Why is it important?
Two-component FAD-dependent monooxygenases catalyze hydroxylation, epoxidation, and halogenation reactions and are physiologically involved in amino acid metabolism, mineralization of aromatic compounds, and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites.
Perspectives
More and more representatives of two-component FAD-dependent monooxygenases are being discovered and their characterisation will result in the identification of novel physiological roles, functional properties, and a variety of biocatalytic opportunities.
