What is it about?
We studied a small mountain stream in the Ecuadorian Andes to see how changes in water flow over periods of days to weeks affect aquatic insect diversity. By combining satellite rainfall data, computer models, and field sampling, we found that stream communities respond more to longer-term flow patterns than to single rain events. This approach helps us understand river health even where no direct flow measurements exist.

Why is it important?
Remote mountain rivers are crucial for biodiversity but often lack monitoring data. Our study shows that it is possible to link river flow and aquatic life using a mix of satellite data and ecological modelling, opening new ways to assess and manage these fragile ecosystems where ground measurements are scarce.
Perspectives
I am excited that this work demonstrates a practical method to study river ecology in hard-to-reach places. It highlights the value of flexible and creative science for protecting biodiversity in the world’s remote mountain streams.
