What is it about?

Composting is a complex process, and finding key indicators to monitor it in a simple and fast way will allow to obtain nutrient-rich products to be used in soil reclamation. In this research, a multifactorial analysis of the biosolids composting process for 120 days was carried out, with the purpose of selecting indicators related to the quality of the compost obtained. Two indicators closely related to the quality of the compost were obtained, the first one related to the nitrogen cycle and the second one related to the enzymatic activity of the microorganisms involved in the process. The treatments used made it possible to obtain a high quality phytonutritive compost.

Why is it important?

Biosolids are a waste product of urban contaminated water cleanup processes. However, their characteristics allow them to be used as amendments for the recovery of damaged soils or soils with low fertility. The use of waste as raw material prevents biosolids from ending up in landfills and they are useful for the improvement of soil characteristics.

Perspectives

The selection of key indicators, related to compost quality, and integrated in an index, will allow the systematic monitoring of biosolids composting processes.
