What is it about?

This study explores collaboration in research related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Using bibliometric methods and network analysis, it examines co-authorship patterns, including repeat collaboration and collaboration over time. The results show increased collaboration at both the author and institutional levels, but most collaborations were one-time occurrences. Repeat collaborations were more common at the institutional level and happened after a longer period. The study highlights key institutions that could foster more consistent and sustainable collaboration, offering insights for strengthening research networks to address global challenges.

Why is it important?

This research is important because it sheds light on how collaboration can drive progress in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By analyzing patterns in research partnerships, the study identifies opportunities to improve consistency and long-term cooperation, which are essential for tackling global challenges like poverty, climate change, and inequality. Understanding these collaboration dynamics can help institutions and researchers build stronger, more sustainable partnerships that enhance the impact of SDG-related research. Ultimately, it provides a roadmap for fostering effective collaboration that can lead to meaningful, long-lasting change.

Perspectives

As an evaluator of research partnerships, I find this study valuable because it emphasizes the importance of long-term, sustainable collaborations. Successful partnerships are built on trust and shared goals, which are key to solving global challenges. The study's focus on repeat collaborations and institutional involvement highlights how strong, ongoing partnerships can lead to greater impact. Its insights are useful not only for SDG research but also for strengthening partnerships in other fields, offering lessons for creating more effective and enduring collaborations.
