What is it about?

In this study we extracted all the data from publications where pseudotype neutralisation assays had been performed in parallel with wildtype neutralisation assays and compared them using a range of statistical methods. These methods demonstrated that for many virus species, the two methods are interchangeable.

Why is it important?

For many viruses like SARS-CoV-2, the data presented in this study demonstrate that pseudotype viruses can substitute for wildtype viruses. This makes the immunogenicity testing of new vaccines and mAbs much easier and more widely accessible.

Perspectives

I am very proud that this meta-analysis has been performed. My lab is a great advocate for pseudotype-based neutralisation assays and facilitates and promotes their usage among different stakeholders. This publication will hopefully help to get more recognition for these assays outside of academia.
