Why is it important?

Recent findings in the field of gonococcal immunopathogenesis give new hope and impetus to the search for an effective vaccine against gonorrhea, which persists at an unacceptably high rate, and is becoming harder to treat effectively because of the spread of antibiotic resistance.

Perspectives

The authors of this editorial served as guest editors for the research topic hosted by Frontiers in Immunology. We offer it as a state-of-the-art introduction into the field, summarizing the current knowledge on human immune responses to gonococcal infection, and how this can be exploited to develop an effective vaccine.
