The role of DNA methylation marks in behavioral ecology, evolution, and gene regulation in social insects.

Why is it important?

The field of epigenetics in social insects heats up quickly because genomes of social insects became available since 2006. Compelling questions relevant to evolutionary biology, behavioral ecology, and social genomics can be answered gradually. This review is an important piece of work to elucidate the role of epigenetic marks (DNA methylation) in a comprehensive way for students and general public. The discusson of this review also draw everybody's attention on the experimental design and data analysis of NGS data.

Perspectives

This is my first review on extensive topics of epigenetics of social insects including honey bees, wasps, ants, and termites.
