What is it about?

We review the studies assessing how music listening, singing, playing a musical instrument and dancing have an effect on learning. We discuss both short-term effects like singing or listening to music just before learning something demanding, as well as long-term effects such as enhanced cognition in children who have practiced to play a musical instrument for a few years. Our review is aimed at neuroscientists but also to educators.

Why is it important?

It is important to realize that the use of music in education has several benefits. Learning can become qualitatively different when music is used. The evidence shows that there are several different ways to benefit from music in learning and education. We should not ignore these.

Perspectives

I hope that in the future, music is seen as one of the basic tools of educators.
