What is it about?

How unique are bacterial infections in children with cystic fibrosis? A new study shows that Staphylococcus aureus, one of the most common bacteria found in the airways of children with cystic fibrosis, is highly diverse and usually unique to each patient. Researchers found little evidence that the same bacterial strains spread between patients. However, resistance to commonly used antibiotics, especially macrolides, was frequent among adolescents. These findings highlight the importance of regular microbiological monitoring to help preserve the effectiveness of long-term antibiotic treatment in cystic fibrosis.
