What is it about?

A study of healthy adolescents revealed that more than one in three carried Gram-negative bacteria in their oral cavity, and many of these microbes were resistant to multiple antibiotics. Some strains even produced enzymes capable of inactivating important “last-resort” antibiotics. Researchers also found a link between carrying certain resistant bacteria and a history of recurrent respiratory infections. These findings suggest that the mouth may serve as an overlooked reservoir of antimicrobial resistance, even in healthy individuals. Better understanding how resistant bacteria colonize young people could help prevent future infections and limit the spread of antibiotic resistance—one of the greatest public health challenges of our time.
