What is it about?

St Andrews and Compostela were the only cathedrals in western Europe outside Italy to claim relics of apostles. I argue that the cathedral at St Andrews, begun in 1162, was deliberately planned to emulate Old St Peter's in Rome, and that the plan of the town in front of the cathedral was modelled on the Vatican Borgo, It was part of a campaign by the Scottish Crown to get the bishops of St Andrews made archbishops to ensure the Scottish Church remained independent of the English.
