Why is it important?

Based on research into the masque as a dance event and performance, this article debates the influence of a particular published French text on ideas and the staging of the court dance theatre. This is a completely new approach, but based on good understanding of the dance practice of the seventeenth century.

Perspectives

The article takes my doctoral research into the antimasque of the Stuart masque and develops it further to reveal interesting trends in English practice. The issues of staging political ideas in dance are aired for the first time.
