Ageing is not only one of the major risk factors for the painful musculoskeletal condition osteoarthritis but osteoarthritis itself may be involved in the biological ageing process. We discuss the possible relationships between osteoarthritis, ageing, pain, inflammation, disability, muscle weakness and frailty.

Why is it important?

Globally it is estimated that 9.6% of men and 18% of women over 60 years of age have painful osteoarthritis. With increasing life expectancy and ageing populations, osteoarthritis is estimated to soon be the fourth leading cause of disability by 2020.
