What is it about?

Corals have mechanisms to get rid of pollutants, but we have little information about the performance of these mechanisms when the corals are diseased. In our study we measured the response of several enzymes involved in the xenobiotic metabolism in a coral affected by Caribbean yellow band disease.

Why is it important?

To our knowledge, this is the first study on diseased corals concerning the response to pollutants. Additionally, we focused on a coral species that is part of the main reef builders in the Caribbean and whose decline has led it to be categorized as a threatened species.
