Why is it important?

Although it is widely recognized that food insecurity damages economic performance and financial well-being, data constraints have prevented regional estimates from previously being developed. This study illustrates one approach for utilizing national estimates to develop a county level estimate for El Paso, Texas.

Perspectives

El Paso is one of the 25 most impoverished metropolitan economies in the United States. Quantifying the dollar amount of the cost of food insecurity in this county helps bring into focus an important aspect of poverty economics for this region of the country.
