What is it about?

Nanocrystalline cerium (IV) oxide is a technologically important material. In this paper we report preparation of nanocrystalline CeO2 using organic precursor based method. The apparent activation energy for crystalline coarsening is found to be very low (26.8 kJmol-1) for this precursor compared to reported data. In addition to that we have shown for the first time that cerium oxide could be doubly doped by Mg and Zr upto a certain composition.

Why is it important?

We shows that doubly doped CeO2 could be prepared containing both Mg and Zr has been prepared for the first time. Literature survey shows that doping of foreign cations could tune the physical properties of this material, so we could expect that the doubly doped ceria colud have enhanced activity compared to the undoped one which needs further investigation.

Perspectives

The organic precursor based method used for the preparation of ceria could be used for preparation of other oxide systems since the activation energy of this process is low and nanocrystalline product is obtained. on the other hang, the applications of doubly doped ceria have not been investigated yet. This could create a new pathway for the researchers.
