What is it about?
This paper takes 20 residential streets in Hexi district of Nanjing as the research objects, investigates pedestrians’subjective perception and object environment data of the street space environment, analyzes pedestrians’psychological evaluation structure of the street which includes social interaction, spatial atmosphere, vegetation and facilities. On the basis of each evaluation score of the streets based on the common factors, the paper studies the correlation between the subjective evaluation of the street and the object index, concludes the influence mechanism of street object indicators on residents’psychological perception, and explores the street space environment indicators that are conducive to pedestrian-friendly residential blocks.

Why is it important?
The research is important because it focuses on evaluating the friendliness of street space in residential blocks based on residents' subjective observation perspective. By investigating pedestrians' subjective perception and objective environment data of the street space environment, analyzing the psychological evaluation structure of the street, and studying the correlation between the subjective evaluation and the objective index, the research can conclude the influence mechanism of street object indicators on residents' psychological perception. This helps to explore the street space environment indicators that are conducive to pedestrian-friendly residential blocks. Such research is significant in improving the quality of the street space environment, enhancing residents' satisfaction and well-being, and promoting sustainable and livable urban development.
Perspectives
The article titled "Research on the Evaluation of Street Space Friendliness of Residential Blocks Based on Residents' Subjective Observation Perspective" explores the friendliness of street spaces in residential blocks by analyzing residents' subjective observations and perceptions. Here are some key perspectives from the article: Urban Design Perspective: The study emphasizes the importance of street spaces in residential areas, not just for transportation but also as community interaction spaces with social attributes. It highlights the need for enhancing pedestrian-friendly environments to improve the quality of urban living. Psychological Evaluation Structure: The research identifies four main factors influencing residents' perceptions of street space: Social, Spatial Ambiance, Greenery, and Facilities. These factors were derived from factor analysis of pedestrians' psychological evaluations(Research on the Evaluat…). Correlation Analysis of Built Environment Indicators: The study finds various correlations between street environment indicators and residents' subjective evaluations. For example, street width positively correlates with Spatial Ambiance and Greenery scores, while the aspect ratio of streets negatively correlates with Spatial Ambiance scores(Research on the Evaluat…). Transparency coefficient of interfaces and proportion of commercial interactive interfaces positively correlate with Street Social and Facilities factors. High density of residential area entrances and exits negatively correlates with Spatial Ambiance scores, while node public square density shows a positive correlation(Research on the Evaluat…). Functional Facilities and Greenery: The quantity of functional facilities correlates positively with Social and Facilities factors, and pedestrian crosswalk density shows a positive correlation with Spatial Ambiance. Greenery factors like boundary greening density and isolation greening density also show positive correlations(Research on the Evaluat…). Optimization Recommendations: The article suggests optimizing service facility layout, interface design, and spatial enclosure to enhance pedestrian perception of social ambiance and street vitality. It also recommends improving street cross-sections and boundary space designs to ensure effective sidewalk widths and increase greenery planting density(Research on the Evaluat…). It highlights the importance of a balanced tree canopy coverage rate and shrub planting to enhance the perceived spatial ambiance. Additionally, it suggests minimizing vehicle traffic disturbances and providing diverse activity areas in residential entrance spaces and street node public spaces(Research on the Evaluat…). These perspectives underscore the multifaceted approach needed to improve the pedestrian-friendliness of residential streets, considering both subjective psychological factors and objective environmental indicators.
