Why is it important?

Candida auris is a recently emerged fungal pathogen of humans. We know next to nothing about its biology and life cycle. More research to understand virulence and pathogenicity traits of this fungus is needed. Indeed, Candida auris is the first fungus ever for which health care authorities - such as the CDC, PHE, and ECDC - have posted alerts.

Perspectives

Candida auris will be an important study object for years to come, because it still is responsible for candidemia outbreaks in intensive care units. In order to tackle this health crisis, basic research is needed to understand the biology of this fungus, in particular to elucidate the source of its multidrug resistance.
