What is it about?

In order to simulate the effect of exposure to microgravity it is possible to use bed rest with the head tilted a few degrees down. This simulates the effect of microgravity on the body and has proved useful for looking at physiological measures. However, little work has been done on the perceptual consequences of bed rest. Here we demonstrate, for the first time, changes in the perception of the perception of "up"

Why is it important?

This is important because it shows that bed rest can affect perception as well as physiological measures. It means that other perceptual changes might be discovered using this relatively accessible 0g simulation.

Perspectives

We have confirmed that changes found in space can be reproduced on Earth using bedrest. This may be useful for training future astronauts (both professional and tourist) for future space missions.
