What is it about?

We interviewed 11 people with blindness or low vision about their experiences trying to continue working. We found that participants had positive and challenging experiences with technology, employers, and the VR service delivery system. Participants also reported stress associated with their jobs and concern about workplace efficiency. Additionally, participants advised their peers to be proficient in assistive technology use, develop networks, and be persistent in achieving goals.

Why is it important?

People with blindness or low vision (BLV) face many challenges in retaining employment. However, the Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act (WIOA) has refocused vocational rehabilitation (VR) efforts toward job retention and career advancement among people with disabilities.

Perspectives

Job retention and advancement continue to be challenging for persons with blindness or low vision. It is critical that we investigate and revise policies and service delivery systems to provide support to people with blindness or low vision in their efforts to retain or advance in the workplace.
