What is it about?

This chapter discusses the possibilities of theatre as a means of depicting cultural diversity through inclusive scenic projects, performed both by professional and non-professional actors. Said actors foster their subjectivity as individuals and members of a specific community. The author argues that the participation of people who are not usually subjects of the artistic discourse contributes to making hidden realities visible to the audience, at the same time as it promotes the self-representation and cultural empowerment of practitioners. Two recent theatre productions are analysed: Harragas by Marina Bollaín, a documentary play based on the experiences of four young Moroccan migrants; and the adaptation of La casa de Bernarda Alba by Pepa Gamboa, performed by Roma women from the shanty town El Vacie.
