What is it about?

Detail of surgical management for the craiovertebral and cervical lesion in the chondrodysplasia punctata and outcomes were discussed. Appropriate selection of surgical procedure with or without posterior fusion would be beneficial for the motor development but its impact on the respiratory function was limited. Neurosurgical management for the chondrodysplasia puncatata should be considered if the patient is symptomatic or MRI showed severe neural compression.

Why is it important?

Craniovertebral and cervical lesions in chondrodysplasia punctata have long been regarded as out of reach for neurosurgical management. This paper revealed if appropriately treated surgically, the patients would be rewarded for better clinical condition.

Perspectives

The paper is the first to describe successful management of craniovertebral and cervical lesions in chondrodysplasia punctata. More accumulation of cases is required to evaluate the outcome in each subtype of chondrodysplasia punctata. Further study would be needed for the indication for instrumentation in the fragile bone in chondrodysplasia punctata.
